Chapter 28



AR Office


“You asked Di to send our Lunch?” Arnav queried taking his seat opposite to his father in his cabin. There were two lunch boxes opened and had a variety of dishes to savor.

“Anjali wouldn’t do this Arnav. You know she is not a great cook”


Arnav tasted the parathas and savored it.

“She must have got this done by the Chefs” he stated.

“Your wife cooked it”


Arnav paused.

“Khushi?”

“Yes Son. She is your only wife so far. I am talking about Khushi only. She sent us lunch and its delicious” 

Arnav thought for some time and then continued eating. Ayush chuckled.

“I thought you wouldn’t eat knowing she cooked”

“I don’t hate her dad. Not anymore”


His reply brought a smile on Ayush’s lips.

“You know Dad, I always wanted this. A family.. my wife and children all together. She cooking for me, looking after our kids, having a good rapport with Di and you. I wanted all of this. It was impossible to expect it from Khushi when we got married but now when I see her, she is.. exactly what I wanted her to be. So caring, so mature.” He exhaled. “Life never plays fair, does it?”

“It does” Ayush answered. “It does Arnav. Life gives you a chance and you should grab it before it closes that option forever”


Arnav nodded. He knew what his dad meant and was working on it. Right now, he wanted to savor the lunch and think nothing else.


An hour later, Aman knocked the cabin door and entered.


“We have an update on Khushi’s accident” he mentioned heading to Arnav’s desk.

Arnav was curious. After Khushi’s accident the other day, he had asked Aman to check on the CCTV cameras of the nearby stores where this happened.

“We have got a picture of that man on motorbike” he showed it to Arnav. “It’s not very clear as he was wearing a helmet. But we have experts who can clear this image and also run into the police database for any records”


He then showed another paper.


“We got the number plate of this motorbike and have already asked the RTO for the details”

“Good. Any video footage like how this happened?” Arnav queried.

“Yes, its blur but good enough to confirm that this accident was intentional. Khushi didn’t cross the road blindly. This motorbike came from nowhere and hit her”


Arnav clenched his jaw.


“Who the hell can do this to her?” he groaned.

“Someone who doesn’t her to regain her memories maybe”


Aman was right. First the CCTV tapes of the hospital 8 years ago had proved Khushi was threatened and now that same person had tried to hurt her again. Probably, Khushi knew something which they wanted to be hidden. Could it be Shanti Jha?


“Call the experts, we want a clear image of this man. Let’s see if Khushi recognizes him”


Aman grabbed the stuff and strode out to work on Arnav’s commands. Arnav leaned back on his chair. His wife was attacked not once but twice and he couldn’t do anything so far. Not anymore. He will find that person and make sure he/she is punished for this gruesome act.

When Ayush and Arnav returned home from work, they saw Khushi helping Aarav with his homework. She was teaching him mathematics.


“Call di” Arnav mentioned to Hari Prakash. He looked serious and it was hard to understand what was going in his head.


Anjali was in her room and when she got to know Arnav was back and calling her down, she didn’t waste time in reaching the living room. Ayush and Arnav had settled down on the couch with Khushi.


“You called me Chotte?”

“Yes Di. Just wanted to inform you that we have a guest coming tonight for Dinner. I hope you don’t mind. Don’t worry about the food. We have instructed the chefs to cook”

Khushi was confused and so was Anjali.

“Guest?” Anjali asked. “Your business associates?”

“No one from Business. You would know when he comes. Just get ready and wear something in Blue”


Anjali frowned.


“If you have invited some marriage alliance for me then..”

“Di.. Please”


Ayush cleared his throat.

“Anjali, just for once, do as he says. We want you to meet someone and that’s it. What is the harm in that?”

Anjali was raged. She turned around and walked back to her room. Khushi who was quiet so far, stared at her father-in-law.


“Uncle, I know I have no rights to talk in this family matter, especially Anjali’s. But I don’t think we should force her to meet someone”


Ayush sighed and got up.

“This was Arnav’s idea. You have to talk to my son on that. Anyway, I will go freshen up”

“Daadu, who is coming?” Aarav asked.

“A guest Aarav. You should get dressed too. Come on, let me select a good T-Shirt for you”

“Mom, I will finish this later” he said packing his books in the bag again and rushed with Ayush upstairs.


Arnav had leaned on the couch, his eyes fixed on Khushi who was nervous to take this matter to him.


“I know what I am doing” he muttered.

“I am sure you do but Anjali has every right to choose her man. I think she is still stuck for Shyam Jha”


Arnav was quiet. He just wanted to know Khushi’s thoughts.


“Dad told me Shyam is still single. Why don’t we… I mean.. Why don’t we talk to him once and see if he is still interested in Anjali?”


Arnav swallowed hard. Khushi found it hard to read his face.

“If you can’t initiate this, I can. After all, I am the one responsible for breaking their engagement”

Arnav sighed in disbelief.

“All these years I thought the same. Its you who broke my sister’s alliance. But its not the entire truth Khushi. If Di was right, Shyam didn’t trust her enough to believe all those allegations you put on her were false. And if you were right, he still didn’t show any signs of knowing why Di got engaged to him if she loved someone else. He didn’t show any necessity to talk to Di once and clear this before running to Canada. So, no. No third person can break a bond between the two people. The couple themselves are responsible for that”


Tears gushed in her eyes but she wiped them off without letting them fall.


“It’s not just me who got matured with time then.. so have you and your thoughts” she mocked.


Arnav got up from the couch and she thought he was leaving to his room. But he reached her. She was still seated on the single couch and when he leaned over her, she could only stare in his eyes.


“That was not the moral of my words” he muttered. “The moral was… we both are equally responsible for our broken relationship as well. Not just you.. or me alone”


She swallowed when his gaze lingered on her face for longer than intended but then he pulled back and left her alone. Finally, he at least accepted she alone wasn’t to be blamed.

“Aarav? You aren’t ready yet. The guest will be coming any moment” Khushi barged in her son’s room who was still cycling in his room.

“Mom, 2 minutes”

“No” she blocked him from cycling further and with much efforts carried him in arms. “My son is heavy..”

Aarav giggled.

“Dad carries me so well”

She placed him on bed and hurried to the closet.

“That’s because Dad is stronger than Mom”

She removed a Maroon T shirt like the one Arnav was wearing tonight.

“This would twin with your Dad’s shirt”

“Why are you not twinning with me? Why don’t you wear a Maroon dress?”


Khushi pouted recalling Arnav had strictly warned her not to wear anything in red.


“I don’t have a maroon saree” she lied. “But that’s okay. My son and husband are matching today, that’s enough”


She made him wear the T shirt and kissed his cheeks.

“Mom”

“Hmm” she was brushing his hair.

“Do you love me?”


Khushi smiled.

“More than myself. More than anyone in this world”

Aarav grinned.

“And Dad?”

“Dad too sweetheart. Dad loves you too and maybe more than..”

“No.. I meant.. Do you love Dad?”


Now she froze. Why was Aarav suddenly asking her this? Arnav who had just reached there, stopped at the door. He couldn’t believe Aarav just asked Khushi that and more than that he was curious what Khushi would respond.


“Mom” Aarav shook her. “Do you love Dad?”

Khushi could feel her heart racing. She knew Aarav wouldn’t stop until he gets his answers.

“You told me you and Dad always used to fight. But you don’t fight now. So, do you love him?”


His observation was good. He had not seen them fighting these days and it wasn’t because they didn’t fight. They argued still but not before his eyes.


“Mom tell me, do you love dad” he shook her again.


She made Aarav sit on her lap and cuddled him.

“Your Dad is a good man Aarav. He has always been good to everyone. He is a good son, good brother and an excellent father. How can anyone not like him?”


Her diplomatic answer didn’t go well with Arnav. More than Aarav, he was eager to hear those exact words from her mouth. Aarav kept watching her face as she continued.


“He gave me you..” she kissed his cheek. “He took care of me when you were in my tummy. Here..” she pointed at her stomach.. “You were this much..” she gestured how tiny he was using her fingers. He was looking after you even when you were inside me Aarav. And I am glad he never stopped looking after you”


Aarav hit his palm on his forehead.


“Mom, I need one-word answer. Do you love Dad?? Yes or No”


Now that was so typical of him. Aarav was just like Arnav at times. She pinched his nose and smiled.

“Yes, I love your father. I love him”


Arnav who was still leaning at the door, was cold and speechless. He didn’t realize when his hand pushed the vase at the side of the door and it fell down, luckily not breaking into pieces. The noise startled both mother and son.


“Dad..”

Aarav jumped from Khushi’s lap and rushed to him.

“Look we are matching today..”

Arnav took him in his embrace but his eyes were still locked with his wife. She was embarrassed. Did Arnav hear that? Was he mad?

“Daadu is calling you.. go down” Arnav said to Aarav who didn’t waste time in obeying.

Khushi composed her shivering body. It was so odd to feel for a man who only saw flaws in her. She decided to leave the room which suddenly started feeling smaller and smaller. It wasn’t the room squeezing in… She felt so as Arnav Singh Raizada was heading towards her..
