Chapter 56A


Khushi’s POV


Babuji exhales as he hears me out completely. After revealing my truth to the entire family soon after Akash and NK’s wedding, I insisted Arnav to take me to Babuji the next morning so that I could confess to him the same. Past few months I had literally pretended to have lost my memories and not knowing anything about me being the bride of Sheesh Mahal. But now that Arnav has got to know I was faking it, though for the betterment of him and his family, he is unwilling to let me go away from his life. He believes our love for each other will fight this evil power inside me.

“I am sorry Babuji,” I apologize as he looks at me annoyed. “I lied to you and everyone else. I am sorry.”

I leave Arnav’s hand to make my way to Babuji and give him a tight hug.

“Silly girl.” He strokes my back, taking me in his embrace. “How could you think you will hurt any one of us? My daughter is not that weak to let some unknown power or curse to win over her sacred heart.”

I don’t say a word. Babuji pulls away from the hug and wipes my tears.

“Let me tell you a secret, Khushi.”

“Secret?” I ask, confused.

He nods. “Yes. So far I thought it wouldn’t be of any importance to tell you this but now that all this has happened and you worry about this unknown evil power in you, this is the best time you must know something about your mother.”


Mother? I freeze. I turn to Arnav who is equally stunned by this sudden change of conversation.


“You already know the backstory, how Garima and Chandrika were twins and one was the evil sister whereas the other, means Garima, was the sane one.”

“Yes, I know this.”

Babuji clutches my arms.

“What you don’t know is that, Garima had that evil power in her too.”


My jaw drops.

“What? Babuji what are you saying?”

He sighs.

“I am telling you the truth, Khushi. They were born with this unknown power in them. I don’t know where they got it from or was it already in their bloodline from generations, but before my marriage to Garima, she had told me this already so that we start our relationship being transparent to each other. She had told me that she and Chandrika had this strange power within them from their birth. A power which if used wisely could save people, and benefit mankind. Getting premonitions were one of them. But Chandrika was greedy. She harnessed that same power to learn dark things, black magic and ended up becoming a curse to her family and the people connected to her. Garima on the other hand, who realized she could benefit people, showed more interest in becoming the devotee of Devi Maiyaa as a way to thank the goddess for giving her these strange abilities which was rare and magical for the world.”


I am speechless.

“Maa had it too?” I ask. “So, all this strange power that suddenly I have started feeling inside me is not something to worry about? But why didn’t I feel all of this before? I only got premonitions before marriage, nothing else, Babuji.. and now.. its more..”

“You are Garima’s daughter, Khushi,” Babuji explains. “You always had it in you. Probably Garima knew it too that her daughter will have that same power within her. That’s why she left that responsibility of saving the Raizada family from Chandrika’s curse on you, Khushi. Because she knew, you becoming the bride of sheesh Mahal, can end that curse and even if you end it and end up being cursed, that dark power will never taint your pure heart and soul. The premonitions which you got were just the beginning. Even if the curse that Chandrika casted on Arnav and his family is now casted upon you and making you feel these strange power within you, it is never going to hurt you because it can’t control you… YOU have to control it. If Garima could do this.. If Garima could chose her side, so can you. This runs in your blood, Khushi. Don’t be afraid of it. Embrace it and use it to do good for the people around you. No curse is greater than the blessings of Devi Maiyaa and who better than you can know this who has always been such a loyal devotee of Devi Maiyaa from years? She will never fail you, Khushi, and in turn you will never fail her.”


Tears spring in my eyes. But they are tears of contentment. I was afraid this curse inside me is now going to be the end of my goodness but Babuji is right. It can’t control me, I am the one who can control it for the wellness of the people around me.. for my family.. for the Raizadas and for my husband Arnav.

We reach back Sheesh Mahal and get down the car. A sudden worry hits my head.

“Arnav…” I stop him from leading us inside Sheesh Mahal.

“What happened?” he asks.

“If.. if what Babuji said is true that I got these powers from birth through my mother, then…” I swallow nervously.

“Then?” Arnav shrugs not understanding the context.

“Then Anjali and Mohan too might have got these powers from Chandrika.”

Arnav stiffens.

“You are right.”

“Arnav…” I grab his arm. “I don’t have a good feeling about this. What if just like their mother, they too use these powers to harness the evil? They were already influenced by their mother and ..”

A phone ring pauses our conversation. Arnav takes out his phone from the pant pockets and checks the caller id.

“It’s the asylum where Di is admitted right now.” He says before answering the call and puts it on speaker mode so that I can hear it too. “Hello..”

“Mr Arnav Singh Raizada?” the woman speaks.

“yes, who is this?”

“I am Meghana calling from the asylum where Anjali Jha is admitted.”

“Okay..”

I sense it. This is not good news for us.

“Anjali Jha tried to commit suicide.”

“What?” we both shout at the same time.


Meghana tells us Anjali is serious and has no chances of survival. She is under observation but ever since she has come back consciousness she has been asking to meet me. Why me?


Arnav and I quickly drive again to the asylum where Anjali is. Of course we informed the family too but none of them wanted to meet her, even if this was her last. Obviously, they had their reasons. Anjali had been playing with the Raizada family’s emotions from years. How could they forgive her? And she even didn’t stop when the matter was all out in the family, nor was she guilty about it. But why suicide? Why would she try to end her life?


We reach the asylum in an hour and we enter the room where she is taking her last breath. Anjali cut many nerves of her body throughout, draining a lot of blood. The doctors confirmed that she has no chance of survival. We even informed Shyam of this and though the divorce petition was signed by Anjali already, he couldn’t help himself from flying here. It would still take him some time to fly from Bangalore where he currently resided.


I press Arnav’s arm as his steps falter once we enter the room. I can understand his state. He loved Anjali as his elder sister and seeing her on deathbed even though she hurt us all so much, is not easy for him. He wipes the lone drop of tear that falls from his eye before walking ahead with me to Anjali’s bed. As soon as we reach there, she turns to us and opens her eyes weakly. She is too pale to react.


“Why?” Arnav asks, his tone laced with pain. “Why di? Hadnt you done enough to spoil our lives that now you ruined yours too?”

“Be happy.” She mutters softly.. “Be happy that I ended my life, Arnav. Be happy.”


None of us understands this. Arnav clenches his jaw. He can’t bear seeing Anjali in this state.

“I’ll be out.” He says before giving a final glance to Anjali and then with a heavy heart he leaves us alone.

I feel his pain. I don’t think he is going to be fine for some days.


Anjali touches my hand and grips my wrist breaking my chain of thoughts.


“I… I didn’t do this…” she whispers softly.

What? What is she saying?

“I didn’t cut myself.. it did…”

“What did?” I ask her again to understand..

“The power…” she says, finding difficult to breathe..

“Anjali..” I try to calm her down..

“It made me do it.. Khushi.. It will make you do the same… Save yourself..”


And just then the monitor beeps silences which showed her vital status so far.. Anjali takes her last breath, with her hand falling free from my wrist as she passes away.
