Chapter 30


Arnav’s POV


“Why do you look so exhausted? As if you aren’t sleeping well from a few days?” Maa’s query puts me in a dilemma what to reply.

She is right. Because Akash denied giving me sleeping pills I am hardly able to sleep.

“Arnav? Are you not well?”

Maa quickly cups my face.

“I am fine Maa. Just have an early meeting to attend to. So, woke up early.”

She looks suspiciously at me.

“I am worried for you, Arnav,” she holds the sob that is about to come out from her heart.

“Maa.” I grab her wrists and kiss her palm. “I am fine. Everything is fine with me. It’s just the work stress.” I try to convince her.

“You need a break Arnav.”

“I desperately do,” I lie. I don’t need a break. I need the woman I love. I want to see Khushi. I want to be close to her. I just want her. And only I know how I am keeping my patience and control in not flying to USA and meeting her. “As soon as this new project is done, we will fly for a vacation.”

“We should go to New York,” Maa says and I am stunned. New York? How did she know I wanted to go there?

Maa is closely observing my reactions so I pretend to be oblivious to her demand of going to New York.

“Why New York?”

“To be a part of Anjali and Shyam’s happiness. They will be happy if we are there to welcome their child.”

Oh! Yes! She is right.

“But if you don’t want to come there because of Khushi then.. I understand.”

I don’t say a word. How can I tell her I am most desperate to be in New York but I can’t. I know Maa is throwing these words at me to test me. To test if I am still stuck to Khushi and my marriage to her which is going to be nullified by divorce in the coming few months.

“I’m getting late for work, Maa. See you at night. Bye.”

I place a kiss on her forehead and leave for office. That’s the only place where I can hide my feelings from Maa and everyone else who empathizes over my ending marriage.

When I reach my cabin at AR Group, I find my lawyer Roy already seated inside with Aman. They were probably waiting for me. We exchange the pleasantries before coming to the main reason why Roy is here.

“Shashi Gupta has agreed to sign the papers and return Khushi’s property, assets and everything else that he was ruling so far being Khushi’s caretaker.”

He agreed? That’s a good news. Of course according to her mother’s will, Khushi would get it only after she is 30 and Shashi Gupta would be the caretaker until then. But now that I know he is not Khushi’s biological father, I am not letting him snatch what belongs to Khushi rightfully. Already Shashi Gupta is pressed with charges for his black business and is in jail, under a non-bailable offence. My detectives are now even probing over the death of Khushi’s mother to know if it was accidental or did Shashi Gupta tried to kill her. I know this man can go to any lengths for money and power. I compose my thoughts for now.

“That’s great. Just get the papers signed then and..”

“He has a condition, Arnav,” Roy interrupts.

There it is. A condition!!

“Who told him he even has that power to put a condition?” I growl. “He is losing the case clearly Roy. I am not doing any negotiations with him.”

“I know, but whats the harm in knowing what his condition is?”


He is right. Nothing harm in knowing. But… I know what that man can ask from me so I still argue.

“I’m not letting him out of that jail ever, Roy.” I make it clear.

“That’s not what he has asked for in return of signing those papers.”

No?

“Then?”

Roy exhales.

“He wants you to meet him once and only then he will sign the papers before you.”

“What nonsense?” I rise up from my chair. “He thinks I will go to meet him in that jail? Has he lost his mind?”

“I think he has.!! But he seems very eager to meet you once, Arnav. And I see no harm. The case will keep going on for some more months if he doesn't sign now. Though eventually we will win it, we will have to wait for it. I see a great opportunity here. Meet him, get his signatures and its done. Khushi will get her assets rightfully back, and Shashi Gupta will still be inside the jail for the other black business charges on him. It’s a win-win situation if you agree to it.”


I get Roy’s point. He is right. It is a win-win situation.

“Fine, I’ll meet him.” I declare.

Roy tells me he will inform me on a date when he will escort me to Shashi Gupta and then leaves along with Aman, to let me continue my work.

The next Saturday, the meeting is arranged in the small room of the central jail where Shashi Gupta is serving the judicial custody. Roy is also with me in the same room. I don’t need him here, but he is here to protect Shashi Gupta in case I lose my mind while speaking to him. I’ve been strictly briefed by my lawyers, not to even raise a finger at Shashi Gupta and aggravate the situation.


“Arnav,” Shashi Gupta comes inside the room with a police official. He is handcuffed. The police officer waits out leaving him in the CCTV monitored room, with us. Though he looks old and more exhausted, he doesn't have an ounce of guilt over his face. He has sinned me, he has manipulated Khushi and her mother too when she was alive. There are so many people who are victims of his black business and yet this man has no guilt. He surely is going to go in Hell. Wish I could just send him there right away.


Roy passes him the legal papers to sign whereas I just keep glaring at Shashi Gupta.

“You wanted Mr. Raizada to come and see you here. He is here. Now sign the papers,” Roy tells him.

“I’ll sign. Whats the hurry. Let me at least speak to my son-in-law first.”

Roy is about to argue when he continues.

“Oh hold on.. But he is not going to remain my son-in-law for long, is he?” Shashi Gupta laughs.

I clench my jaw. He knows me and Khushi are getting divorced.

“Tsch Tsch ..” he mocks.. “How sad this is, Arnav. But you know what? I always knew this was going to happen. Khushi never loved you..”


I fist my fingers.

“She never will” he adds laughing hysterically. I am about to reach him with Roy blocks my way.

“Arnav, no. You can’t touch him. Just calm down. We are not here for a fight.”

“Then ask him to sign the damn papers, Roy.” I scowl.

“I said I will,” Shashi Gupta stops laughing. “I will sign he papers and give her assets back, Arnav. Khushi will get it. But ..”

He reaches me.

“What are you getting in all this?” he asks with a grin. “Nothing..” he adds. “We both revenged and what happened? What did we both get in return? Nothing. You lost Khushi and I lost my freedom. We are the same..”

That’s it. I lose my cool and clutch him by his collar.

“We are not the same, Shashi Gupta. We can never be. You played with my family’s emotions, their lives for the greed of money. Yes, I played with marriage and love too and I admit I was wrong to do so. I am guilty whereas I don’t even think you know the meaning of guilt.”

Roy pulls us apart.

“Arnav, I said don’t touch him.”

The police officer comes inside and warns me not to hurt the man in custody.

“Sign the damn papers,” I glare at Shashi Gupta.

“Okay.. okay.. I am.. chill..” He winks at me shamelessly and signs the papers which my lawyer Roy forwards. The moment he is done, both me and Roy leave to the door to exit, only to hear him shouting behind us. “If I lose, you lose too, Arnav. You lost everything you wanted. Just like me.. You will also not be at peace. Never..”


I try my best to ignore him and make my way out. At least one thing positive about this meet is that Khushi is finally going to be the rightful owner of everything that belonged to her mother. I know she doesn't need this money anymore and is doing well in terms of self-sustaining from her hard earned income, but I’ll still be happy if she accepts this part which is rightfully hers. I know she eventually will.
