Chapter 47


Their engagement dance was sensual. Khushi was glad the lights were dim and she and Arnav were no longer the center of attraction. People were dancing all around them and the music was loud. Arnav hadn’t shifted his gaze from her face ever since they began dancing.

“What are you looking at?” she asked curling her lips into a smile.

“Future” he mumbled. “Our future” he pulled her closer, their noses touched.

It was hard to avoid the rising carnal tension between them.

“I see our future would-be Mrs. Khushi Singh Raizada”

Khushi had always lived in the present. Not that she never planned her future, she did but it never involved love and commitment. Now it did. 

“What future do you see?” she wrapped her arms around his neck inching closer to his face.

“Months from now I see us honeymooning in the world’s most isolated place.. two years from now.. you are carrying our baby.. Ten years from now.. me and you on a vacation with our children.”

She swallowed nervously.

“You planned everything already?”

“Already” he kissed her cheek.

He twirled her once as the music changed and pulled her again in his arms. She surrendered to his masterful lead. So far, she loved leading her life, now she loved watching him lead. At least the romantic part of it.

“How many children do you intend to have?” she asked, already breathless.

“As many as you want”

The blush was back on her face. Every nerve ending in her body sensitized, preparing for that future.

“How many?” he yearned to know. The music rose in volume.

“Two” she purred.

Arnav had not expected her to give him an exact count but since she told him, he could only smirk.

“Two then” he replied in a promising tone.

She looked up at his face. He was still watching her with dark, glittering eyes.

“Initially I wanted only one child. But then I thought just like I have Kishu.. you have Lavanya, our baby should also have a sibling of its own. So two..”

“Nice thought Miss Gupta. I promise to give you two babies” he kissed her cheeks. They danced for some more time until Arnav’s phone buzzed. It was Akash’s message.


‘Meet me at the Monitoring room. Just you”


Arnav was amused. This investigation was for the Guptas then why did Akash called him alone? Did he get some clue on Shashi Gupta’s phone?


“Whose message?” she asked unwrapping her arms from his neck.

“Not important. I have to make a call. Will come back”

He kissed her forehead and made his way in the Gupta Mansion where the monitoring room was set by Akash and his team. This was so unfair on his part to leave her alone even for a minute, on their engagement night. She sighed in disappointed. Even the slightest distance between them tortured her. Bella hopped at her feet and Khushi picked her up.


“Hey sweetheart.. you look gorgeous today..”

Bella licked her arm as Khushi tried to stroke her.

“You never loved pets” Shashi mocked reaching her with Garima.

Khushi hated the two but she still couldn’t push them away or it would hinder Akash’s investigation.


“Pets are far better than humans. They are loyal, they know to give back love they receive and they never hate you” she debated.

“We don’t hate you Khushi, you are our daughter” Garima argued. “Yes, we have always disliked how differently you grew up. But your father and I…”

“Yes, you and him” Khushi interrupted them. “You both are the reason why I have disliked the entire human race”

The Gupta couple was stunned at her outburst.

“But not anymore. I have learnt to channelize my hatred now. If it wasn’t for Kishu, you both wouldn’t be invited here on my special day”

“Your special day is going to turn bitter in no time” Shashi snapped.


Now it pissed her off.

“Don’t say a word” Shashi added. “Not until you hear me out completely. I told you about a gift, didn’t I? It’s about time we give you that”

Khushi’s heart raced. She wasn’t ready for any pain. Tonight, she had started a new phase of her life, she wanted to cut all the painful strings of her past and if her parents had decided to drag her back to that pit of solitude and despair, she would not let them do that.


“Keep the gift with you and excuse me”


She turned away to leave.

“I know Akash is hacking my phone right now” Shashi blurted out.

That was enough for Khushi to stop.

“I know why we are invited tonight. We are not fools”

Khushi swallowed. He knows?

“But you have ruined your own happiness, we didn’t.” he added. 

Khushi felt the sting of tears as she turned around and faced her parents.

“What do you mean?” she growled.

“Means little girl…” Shashi leaned closer to her ears. “Arnav might have got engaged to you.. but he might never marry you”


Khushi shivered with a sudden chill that came from inside her.

Arnav entered the monitoring room. Akash and his team were still working. There were monitors, laptops and lots of network cables inside. This was their primary setup for today’s task.

“Akash..”


Akash turned around at Arnav’s voice.

“What’s the update?” he queried coming closer.

Akash looked tensed but he didn’t hide it yet.

“Shashi Gupta is innocent”

“What?” Arnav snapped. “How is that possible? I am sure he is hiding something. And you told me he bailed out Viraj few years ago. So, that means they know each other”

“They do, I don’t deny that. In fact they even met after Viraj sent those pictures to Khushi at her office”


Arnav was confused. Aman knocked the door intervening their conversation.


“Aman?”

Arnav was not sure what Aman was doing here.

“What are you doing here?”

“I called him” Akash replied on Aman’s behalf.

Arnav shot a glance at Akash.

“Why are we involving Aman in this? I don’t want to risk my friend’s life. Viraj could be dangerous Akash”

“Arnav” Akash clutched his arms. “I am sorry to have involved Aman here but that was necessary. I couldn’t share this with you without his presence”


Aman who by now was standing next to Arnav, patted his back.


“You are scaring me Akash” Arnav snapped. “What the hell have you got?”


Akash looked at Aman who gestured him to share the matter with Arnav Singh Raizada.

Shashi and Garima stood behind Khushi at the corner of the garden, aloof from the rest of the crowd. Khushi tightened the fold of her arms across her front. Whatever her father was revealing to her, she wanted it all to be false.


“I know Viraj is going to blackmail you. He even sent you the pictures of that incident.. of that ugly fight between him and NK. I know everything”

“That’s because you are supporting him” Khushi scowled.

“Supporting?” Shashi laughed sarcastically. “I would never do that to my son”

“Stop lying”

“I am not lying. If I had to support Viraj, he would have met Arnav’s grandmother during the Satsang”


Khushi was skeptical now. Was her father telling the truth?


“I stopped him from meeting Arnav’s grandmother that day” Shashi added.

“Nani knows it already” Khushi replied. “We have told her everything now. She knows what NK did and how that verbal fight turned ugly. She knows it. Kishu has even apologized to her and to all of us”

“Maybe he has and its good. But if Lavanya, Arnav and their Nani has forgiven him, its only because they know half the truth. The rest half will shatter them..”


Khushi shivered.

“Don’t.. don’t feed me with your lies. I don’t understand why can’t you see me and Kishu happy? Only because we both have detached from you? Only because we didn’t give you the rights to lead us?” Khushi shouted. “You both didn’t set up an example of being a good parent or even a good couple and now when me and Kishu have found our life partners, you want to snatch them from us?”

“Enough” Shashi screamed. “You should be thankful we are here because despite knowing your fiancee’s friend .. that Ex military man.. Akash .. is going to hack our phones, we have come here to help you”

“Oh really?” she mocked. “If you have come here despite knowing all that then it must be for more money. That’s what you always wanted from me”


Garima clasped Khushi’s hand and turned her around to face her.


“No, we didn’t come here for money. We came here to save NK’s married life and your relationship with Arnav Singh Raizada. If you don’t listen to us now, you might waste more time and even the only opportunity to save it” Garima stated.


Her mother’s serious words, pricked Khushi’s heart. What were they talking about? She stared at Garima for some time until Shashi Gupta broke the truth out.


“I met Viraj few years ago. He worked in my friend’s company and was caught doing some fraud in the finance. I liked his spirit and unbothered attitude. That’s why I bailed him out. But now that his job was gone and he badly needed one, I gave him. I asked him to befriend Nandakishore”


Khushi frowned.

“I wanted someone to keep an eye on you and NK and give me updates on what’s happening in the Gupta Industries or in your personal lives. Viraj didn’t disappoint me. He gave me every update about you and NK”


Now Khushi realized how her father was always updated about her business decisions, where all NK went for vacations with his friends, etc. He was spying in their lives and she never traced it!!


“Then I realized Viraj was very keen about you.. Whenever he gave me your updates specifically, his face brightened” Shashi added. “That’s when this idea of planting him in your life as a life partner came in my mind. I spoke to him and he couldn’t be happier”


Khushi felt disgusted.

“You wanted such a man in your daughter’s life? A fraud…?” she queried repulsively. “I am sure you had your motives”

“I wanted someone who could open the locks of your money drawers” Shashi shamelessly replied.

“Oh right. How could I forget that?” she gave a short laugh. “I am so glad your plan backfired. I chose Arnav”

“You did.. And if you wish to keep it that way.. then you better hurry up”


Khushi frowned again.

“You see this” she showed her ring which Arnav had just inserted on her finger tonight. “I got engaged. You witnessed it. You still think Arnav will leave me? He has supported me all the time.. He is the one who has lighted my life.. Even if I walk back, he will never lose me. He will stop me .. find me… and he will make me his.. I trust him that much… Over anything and anyone in this world..”


“Even over his mother?” Shashi asked.


That one question zipped her lips. What did he mean?


“That day… when Viraj and NK fought on that road, you know who witnessed it?”

Khushi’s breath hitched.

“Arnav’s mother”

Khushi swallowed nervously. Where was this leading to?

“Those pictures which Viraj blackmailed you was from Arnav’s mother’s phone. He can prove that”

“So?” Khushi stuttered. “So what? It was just a fight.. between two boys and…”

“NK ran away leaving Viraj injured behind.” Shashi continued. “YOU.. you advised him to do so..”

“I wanted him safe.. I was worried for him..” she argued. “And I sent an ambulance for Viraj.. he was not there”

“That’s because Arnav’s mother helped him. She took him in her car to the hospital. She saved his life that night.. but…”

“But?”


Khushi could feel it.. something terribly wrong happened that night.. she could feel it..


“But on her way back to her home, she met with an accident.. The same accident which killed her in few hours after that..”


Fear shivered down her spine as she dropped on her knees. Khushi recalled Arnav telling her that his mother met with an accident three years ago. She was serious and needed blood. He couldn’t reach on time and she didn’t make it. That one incident changed his life.. he was broke.. he lost control on his own life. He loved his mother too much to let her go because of his delay… he could have saved her had he reached on time.. he could have saved her by giving his blood as their blood group matched. But he couldn’t.. and that changed his life… it took him 3 years to sort himself. What would he go through if he gets to know she and NK were partially responsible for that fateful incident with his mother?
