Two Years Later


Khushi checked her watch for the tenth time in the last few minutes. Her fingers twitched to grab the phone and just type what she wanted to tell him, but it would be no fun sharing this news using an electronic medium.

“What do you think about this proposal Khush?”

NK’s sudden question related to their new Business Venture interrupts her chain of thoughts. Khushi was only physically present in this Conference, mentally she was elsewhere.

“I will give my thoughts after some more research. I don’t want to hurry up and take a decision in haste”

Khushi leaned back on her chair, glancing at the Projector screen where her brother Nandakishore was explaining the statistics of their Project. He was working on this from past few weeks and without her help. NK’s focus on their Business had considerably increased and he was just not doing it for assisting her, but he looked really interested in taking their Company to a new level and this is exactly what she had dreamed of some day.


“That’s all for today gentleman and my beautiful Sister” he remarked ending the conference. “Let me know if you have doubts, we can go over this once again and if we are all on the same page, lets sign the deal. It’s going to give us enough profits for the next one year”


Khushi looked at everyone who were part of this meeting. They were impressed and convinced with the presentation and the data explained by NK. After everyone gave their inputs and left back to continue their work, Khushi stood up. NK was busy shutting down his Laptop.

Three weeks had passed already and Arnav was still counting days for Khushi’s return. She had started her trip from Singapore where she spent a week checking their Company work status, then she flew to Melbourne, Australia and now she was in Dubai. Despite her busy schedule, she called him once every day and though they didn’t speak for hours, they communicated their feelings to each other at every instance possible. Khushi was shopping some stuff for the baby to come and some for the family too when her phone vibrated in her pocket, startling her. It was Arnav’s call which she didn’t delay answering.


“I was just thinking to call you” she said strolling through the baby’s attire section.

“See… I read your thoughts even being miles away” he replied.


She smiled inwardly, pleased to know how much they affected each other. She never believed in telepathy until she fell in love with this man. Lately, since they were away, whenever she had missed him and decided to communicate with him, he had always reached her first through a message, voice or video call. It was strange.


“At office?” he asked breaking her stance.

“Is that a yes?” Arnav’s hands were in her hair, holding her in place as he read her eyes. He has just proposed her for marriage officially in Prem Nivas, going on his knees.

Khushi inhaled sharply and then shook her head.

“Yes, I am ready to marry you Arnav Singh Raizada. Whenever you want, however you want”

His eyes were huge and dark at her reply and then his mouth captured hers again. After minute when they broke the kiss, he had more to say. Lifting her chin with his fingers, he forced her to meet his eyes.

“I love you”

Khushi froze as her heart began to pound. Love was a very intense emotion for her with a lot of baggage already. When you loved someone, you do everything and anything to hold on to that love. She had craved for this feeling, for someone to make her believe in it and never in her dreams she thought it would knock her dark door of heart so soon.

Lavanya used the washroom and came out. The Villa was crowded with guests but none around this area where she decided to spend some time admiring the pictures of Aman’s childhood with his parents, hung on the wall. There was one particular picture which picked her gaze for long. Aman’s father and mother were holding one-year old Aman’s hands and helping him walk. She gently touched her belly to feel her baby. The next instant, she felt another palm stroking her stomach the same way. She didn’t flinch knowing who he was. Nandakishore slid his other arm around her belly, from behind, pulling her closer and admiring those pictures with her.

“We will click more of these kinds too” he whispered.

Lavanya didn’t react. She wanted to rest her head on his shoulder, lean on him, hear him talk and plan their future, but she curbed those desires.

“I never got this kind of parenting” NK continued. “I don’t want my child to miss any of this. I might not be the best husband now, but I want to be one and a good father too”

“As your wife?” she repeated. Arnav didn’t move neither let her make movements. He had held her close to his body, his heart racing at the thought of not seeing her for one whole month. “Are you proposing me to marry you?”


Yes, he was. Arnav had no plans to force her for the marriage yet but now that she had decided to move out of Gupta Mansion, this was the only place he wanted her to stay.. with him. Nani might not approve Khushi staying in Shantivan without marriage, which is why he put forth the wedding idea.

“That’s the next stop after engagement” he replied. “We had to marry someday, why not now?”

Khushi almost panicked seeing the confidence on his face.

“Or should I say you still have commitment issues”

Gupta Mansion



Khushi was still in the same bathrobe but she looked better than before. Arnav fed her the hot soup which NK arranged.

“I don’t want more” she denied pushing his arm away gently.

“This is last” he said. “for me”

Khushi opened her mouth and sipped the soup. She never had anyone to tend her worries, make her feel loved and cared. NK being younger to her, she was the one who strived to give him that pampering and support. He also loved her back and even took care of her when she was sick but whatever Arnav did today was beyond her expectations.

“How is Lavanya?” She finally came to the point.

“She will be fine. I have told her not to take the contract part seriously. It was between us and its over. That’s all matters for now”

Garima immediately clutched Khushi’s hand over the table.


“You can’t do this to us. We are your parents. We have every rights to be around you and NK”

“You both lost those rights years ago” she shrugged her off.


When Khushi stared back at Shashi, she realized her father had not predicted any of this.

“What had you thought?” she snapped. “You will shower some fake love, pretend you both are getting together again, scare us using Viraj and then be our savior from all these false threats so that me and Kishu will bring you back in our lives? In Gupta Mansion?”

Last night was torturous for the Gupta siblings. After Arnav left for Shantivan, Khushi spent some time with Bella in her room. She was her only solace last night. Today when she woke up and came down to get a coffee for herself, she found NK in the kitchen already. He looked messed up.


“Kishu?” she strode in. “What are you doing here so early?”


NK was used to wake up late but since he had joined the office, he changed his waking time. But today he was awake much early than that.

“It’s hardly 06:00” she mentioned.

NK sipped his black coffee and leaned back on the Kitchen slab.

“Couldn’t sleep well”

His voice strained. Khushi tried to analyze the situation.

Two days was all she got to handle the situation. Arnav had dropped her to work knowing she didn’t get her guards along. His protective side for the family was something she adored always. She was part of his family now and vice versa and this truth had no expiry. Her parents tried their best to get into her life again, but Arnav’s trust and love, came out winning, wiping all the insecurities she had towards this relationship. One thing was clear. They were going to fight and clear the remaining obstacles between them, together.


That day despite NK was around her for the whole time, she couldn’t tell him. He was too excited about work and she even had planned a surprise for him. She dragged him along to the floor above giving some work excuse.


“Khush, do we have another meeting now? Do I look okay to attend one? I mean.. I am exhausted.. How do you manage attending back-to-back meetings?”

The sharp noise of his cabin door broke Arnav’s flashback and he focused on the woman standing before him. She was here!! Khushi Gupta!!

“Are we still engaged?” she spat in fury.


“Are we?” he asked adding more to her rage.

“Don’t throw my question at me. I didn’t run away last night, you did”

“You know why” he replied.

She was stunned by his one phrase responses. They scared her!! Was he still grieving for his mother’s accident? She wanted to support him in this grief but will he let her do that?

No. She was not responsible for Arnav’s mother’s accident. She and NK didn’t even know Viraj was helped by some woman. And that woman was Arnav’s mother. Khushi took her decision to save her brother that day from troubles and she also did her part in sending an ambulance for Viraj. She did everything possible to find Viraj who suddenly went missing and today after knowing Arnav’s mother helped him and got him to the hospital and showing humanity towards a stranger, only made her proud. If only, that fateful accident hadn’t happened on her way back to Shantivan, things would have been different. She might have been alive today and even Arnav would not suffer for three years.


Whilst her sane mind flushed these thoughts, a part of it forced her to think what if NK and Viraj had never fought? What if Viraj hadn’t got injured and what if SHE didn’t advise NK to leave injured Viraj on the spot and flee? Was it really her wrong guidance that forced a passerby, i.e., Arnav’s mother, to intervene? Had NK taken Viraj to hospital that night, Arnav’s mother would have drove back to Shantivan and the accident which she faced might have averted?

Their engagement dance was sensual. Khushi was glad the lights were dim and she and Arnav were no longer the center of attraction. People were dancing all around them and the music was loud. Arnav hadn’t shifted his gaze from her face ever since they began dancing.

“What are you looking at?” she asked curling her lips into a smile.

“Future” he mumbled. “Our future” he pulled her closer, their noses touched.

It was hard to avoid the rising carnal tension between them.

“I see our future would-be Mrs. Khushi Singh Raizada”

Khushi had always lived in the present. Not that she never planned her future, she did but it never involved love and commitment. Now it did.

Engagement Day


Arnav looked at himself in the mirror. Lavanya had chosen his attire for tonight; a grey party suit. Last one-week Lavanya and Nandakishore had been busier than anyone else in their families. They had so much to take care of and just like he and Khushi had ensured La-NK marriage went smooth, they too planned this engagement smoothly. It was in Gupta Mansion and he couldn’t afford to be late. His phone rang. It was Lavanya.


“ASR, don’t tell me you haven’t started for here yet. The Mahurat is an hour. You cannot be late”


Arnav picked his car keys and strode out.


“La. Relax. I will be there in 15 minutes” he replied. “And by the way, let my fiancée taste the fruit of patience for once” he teased.

Lavanya giggled at first and then stopped. “Ooops, I forgot to mention ASR, my phone is on speaker mode which means… your fiancée heard what you just said. She is standing right next to me”

“I can’t believe we are taking a walk in your lawn at this hour of the night” Arnav mentioned as he strolled with Khushi outside the Gupta Mansion.

After discussing their plans for the engagement, Nani had retired to her room. But Arnav and Khushi were not ready to call it a night yet. It was Khushi’s idea to take a walk in the garden for some time. With their fingers entwined in each other’s, Khushi leaned her head on his shoulder. She still couldn’t believe that she had agreed for getting married to Arnav Singh Raizada. It meant commitment.. permanence. So far, the only relationship she had believed and committed to was her bonding with Nandakishore. But since Arnav and his family had stepped in her life, she was slowly opening her heart and accepting new commitments and relationships. While Arnav discussed few more ideas regarding their engagement, she was lost in her own world. Arnav soon realized it and decided to bring her out of this stance.

“Now?” NK questioned Arnav who had just announced them that they were cutting the trip short and leaving for Delhi again. “But why? I mean is Nani okay?”

Lavanya was equally surprised.

“ASR… what are you both hiding from us?”

Arnav turned to Khushi because so far, she hadn’t told NK anything about Viraj’s return in their lives again.

“Means you are hiding something” NK added seeing their confused faces.

“Kishu” Khushi reached him. “Please listen to us for now. Pack your bags and we are flying in an hour. I am sorry that we have to leave like this but.. its an emergency. But Nani is fine and on way from her Satsang”

Everyone retired to their rooms sooner that night and Khushi and Arnav were heading back too, when a message on Arnav’s phone stopped them. Khushi noticed the confusion on his face as he checked his phone.

“Whose message?”

“Akash..” he replied. “He is here”

“Here? Why?”

“I don’t know. I will go check on him. You head back to the room”

He kissed her hair and untangled their hands to make his way to the lobby where Akash said he was waiting. She wanted to go with him to know why Akash was suddenly here. Did he get some clue on Viraj? Or is there any threat to them here which is why Akash joined his task force to keep them safe? But she didn’t disobey Arnav’s orders. She knew whatever the circumstance would be, he will share with her.

There was a long silence between them. Khushi had just confessed to Arnav what happened with her when she was 8. She was abducted but her sharp wits and timely actions freed her. He couldn’t even imagine a child going through such a bad phase in life. Now he could relate why few weeks ago when she made him her driver for one whole day, she fretted when he drove the car speedily. She had almost got a mild panic attack that night and her words ‘Get off me.. Help’ rang in his ears. If he had known this before, he would never play with her sensitive feelings.

His soft strokes on her back boosted her to continue sharing her past.

“I ran as far as I could and only after hours of running, I realized I was lost. Even to breathe in that dark night and freezing cold seemed no less than death. When all my energy drained, I sat alone at the corner of the busy road, hoping for help. The clouds started bursting; I was drenched in the rain but no vehicle stopped to help me. It was that night Arnav.. that night when I realized what it meant to be really alone.”

The group Dinner was going well with lots of gossips and discussions.


“I love family outings” Lavanya mentioned. “Our parents used to take us out every year on vacations. Me and ASR always used to fight over the destination. I loved to go to Disney land or Fantasy world but ASR liked places with lots of science museums”

Khushi entwined her fingers with Arnav’s below the table.

“What about you both?” Lavanya asked NK.

“uhh..” NK swallowed. “We… we hardly had such outings with our parents” he admitted. “They.. were mostly busy in their own world”

Khushi’s fingers turned cold which Arnav instantly realized. This happened only when Khushi recollected her past and feared of something. He didn’t want her to feel edgy again so he raised their hand hold and kissed her fingers. When he gave her a reassuring smile, her mood changed and she focused back on eating. The topics changed and NK shared the news of he joining the Gupta business. He was so eager to learn and take his role seriously which made both Lavanya and Khushi proud of him. Ruby shared her ups and downs in the media house she was running and had some funny incidents to share too. While they all talked and enjoyed the food, Arnav’s fingers played with Khushi’s bare shoulder and her hair. She leaned on to him happily, both in their own little world.

Cupping the back of her head without wasting time Arnav kissed her and everything intensified. They always had a spark since the very first time they met and every second it had deepened. They pulled away and looked at each other for a long moment in a stunned silence.

“What are we?” he asked palming her cheek. “You called me your boyfriend this morning. You even said I am the only one you trust. Does that mean we are officially dating?”

She recalled that she had used these terms today and she wasn’t surprised at all.

“We lied to our families of being in a relationship, but we do all those things which a couple would. We crave for each other when we are not together. We sleep peacefully in each other’s arms. We have started sharing our problems, our feelings openly. Even a simple threat on you makes me insane and its obvious we cannot see each other with someone else. What is this?” His voice was deep, low and intimate.
