Chapter 23


Khushi’s POV


“Khushi, how about this one?” Payal shows me a nightgown I just nod blankly.


Whatever Soham told me in the hospital is strengthening my belief that there is some negative energy in Sheesh Mahal which has some connection to Arnav. I have to find out the facts about Arnav’s birth and the past of Sheesh Mahal to connect the dots. Though Arnav had told me he was born premature, at midnight on no moon, I have a suspicion his birth has additional story too.


“This one is more sexy, don’t you think?” Payal asks again and I continue to shake my head. “Alright, this one then. Done? Shall we pack it?”

I nod and quickly check my phone to see if I missed any of Arnav’s calls or messages but there are no notifications on my phone. Suddenly the urge to see him back home safe and sound resonates in my head. I message him to come soon and then paying the bill we get back to the car where Akash is waiting for us.

The moment I reach home, I am busy with the family again. They are excited to watch the old videos of their family in Sheesh Mahal tomorrow with me and I can’t wait for that either to see if I get any clue. Almost half an hour later, I get a message from Arnav which I check instantly. He is on way to home and asks me if I am following his demand of wearing a red color nightwear. I don’t know about the outfit but my cheeks are surely red for now. I reply back asking him to come and check it himself. He sends me a heart emoji in response that too a red color heart and my heart beats rapidly apprehending why he wants to see me in red tonight?


The urge to be in his favourite color when he reaches home makes me quickly finish the dinner with the family as Arnav already had his on the way and then I make my way to the bedroom. My eyes dart open seeing the nightgown Payal selected for me. It’s a satin gown, one-piece and not covering beyond the mid thighs. In fact it also has a matching lingerie set and that’s mix of satin and net. I can’t believe she picked this one for me? I was so lost in my thoughts that time that I didn’t realize what she bought. Did I really pay 3500 rupees for this cheap nighty? No way I am wearing it. I put the bag in the closet again when the lights go again. This is heights. I don’t know when Arnav is going to get this issue fixed. I use the torch light and make my way down to the living room. Luckily Hari Prakash is there and he gives me a few candles to light in my room. I take them and come back to my bedroom. Lighting them at specific spots to illuminate the room, I head to the bathroom to change. Obviously, I wear another decent night gown which I had got along with me when I came to Sheesh Mahal. When I come out, I see him..

“Arnav? When did you come?”

He doesn't reply, just stares at the dressing mirror, standing coldly.

“No one in the family knows you came back from Delhi. Why is that? Did you want to give me a surprise?” I mock, striding towards him.

I don’t understand why the lights are gone again. But there is still some light in the room as I had lit a few candles.

“You know I met Soham in the hospital and you wont believe what he said..” I reach closer to him and since he is in no mood to look at me, I shift my gaze onto the mirror and my heart skips a beat. He is not my Arnav. His blue eyes sparkle in his mirror reflection as his gaze penetrates in my skin like fire.

I scream aloud in fear, turning around when the lights come back and I hear Arnav’s voice. He has just entered the bedroom.

“Khushi?” He rushes to me and I meet him half way before hugging him tight. “What.. what happened? Why did you scream?”


For almost one minute I am shivering in his arms. He keeps stroking my back.


“Khushi talk to me dammit.”


I pull away slowly and turn to the mirror where I had seen the blue-eyed Arnav.

“He… he was here..”

“Who was here?” Arnav asks turning towards the mirror.

“You.. You were here… with those… blue eyes…”


Arnav frowns.

“I just came back from Delhi and the moment I reached the door I heard your scream. When I opened the door there was no one, Khushi. Just you..” he clarifies.

“That’s impossible Arnav. I Saw him.. He was standing right here.. and.. I …”

“Sshhh” He cups my face.. “You are stressed..”

“I am not stressed. He was here..” I shove his arm away. “You wont believe but Soham saw him too and he told me that when he saw that blue-eyed version of you, he felt hypnotized and he doesn't remember anything he did after that..”


Arnav grits his teeth.


“Why doesn't Akash know this story?” he snaps and my jaw drops. I look away not willing to tell him I met Soham and poked him to tell me this..


Arnav pulls my jaw forcing me to look at him again.

“You met Soham without Akash’s presence? Without my approval? Despite promising me you wouldn’t do anything as such?”

“Arnav.. i..”


He pushes me away with a jerk and strides inside. I annoyed him.

“Arnav please don’t do this..” I hold his arm again and he shoves it off and turns around to meet my gaze.

“I told you not to do something and yet you defied me. And now you expect me to be normal again? Sorry, Khushi but that’s something I am never going to forgive you for.”


He marches to the closet, grabs his nightdress and then locks himself in the bathroom. Tears roll down my eyes. Yes, I defied him but that’s only to know what is wrong with this place. Doesn't he see I am doing this for us?

Arnav’s POV


I can’t believe Khushi broke the promise. All I want her is safe and she is purposely digging things and getting herself into trouble. I turn off the shower, dry myself, change into my night suit and come out. She is still in the room and tries to block my way.


“Arnav, talk to me.. I know you are upset.”


I turn off the lights.

“Good night, Khushi. I have work early tomorrow.”


I flop on my side of the bed and lie down. It’s not that I am going to get any sleep though. This is not how I planned to treat my newlywed wife. After almost one hour of tossing and turning on the bed, I hear her soft whimpers. Is she crying? The next instant, I turn to her side and find her back facing me. But the way he body shudders makes it clear that she is crying. Damn hell..


“Khushi?” I softly call her but she doesn't turn to me and that’s my cue that I have hurt her too bad. Rolling to her side of the bed, I spoon my wife, pulling her closer to my body. She doesn't struggle to get away from me but nor she makes any movement to show she has forgiven me either. “I am sorry, okay? I made you cry.. I am sorry. But you really shouldn’t have done that Khushi.. It was risky..”


I keep cuddling her, and fortunately her whimpers have cooled down. I kiss her hair and she shivers as my lips touch her earlobe..

“I don’t like it when people break their promises. Please take care of it henceforth..”


Khushi turns around in my arms and I finally get to see my wife’s face. She looks weak and in stress. She caresses my face while looking in my eyes.


“I am sorry that I broke that promise. I’ll try not to from next time.”

“Try?” I mutter, clenching my jaw.

When she doesn't change that word, I am about to turn away but Khushi presses her lips on mine. I don’t want her to make up my mood with this kiss but I am not going to reject it either. I let her kiss me but I don’t kiss her back which irks her. That’s when I pull her hair and make her look in my eyes again.


“This is exactly how I feel when you defy me.. When you want something and not get that in return. Say you’ll never break my promise henceforth..”


She bites her lip.

“Say it, Khushi or else…”

“Or else?” she murmurs, coyly.

“Or else I am never touching you again until you do.”


She frowns as if not believing my words and I know that’s the only way right now to make her agree to me.
