Chapter 60 (Last Part)

As he opened his eyes, he saw his wife watching him with admiration. It was their first morning together after marriage and having her by side was what he needed to get used to.

“Morning” he huskily wished pulling her close. “When did you wake up?”

“I don’t know. Maybe I didn’t sleep at all”

Though she told that in good terms, Arnav was worried.

“What is cooking inside this head, tell me” he kissed her forehead.

“We are in love… married with happy beginnings…” she murmured. “Is this all even true or am I dreaming?”

Arnav relaxed. So all this was still hard for her to believe. His hold around her waist tightened.

AK Villa

Revati circled the Puja thali before the newly wed couple at the door. Apart from the Raizadas, Mathurs and Khushi’s friend Payal, there were no one else in the Villa. All the other guests had dispersed back to their respective homes or hotels where the Raizadas had made their reservations. Arnav admired his mother Revati do all the rituals with so much affection, a rare scene for both him and Ayush Singh Raizada so far. This marriage has brought the cultural traits back in Revati which had subsided all these years whilst she flaunted her luxury and class to the society. She was a different woman back then and now just a wife and mother whose happiness nested in her family.

“Now step inside putting your right leg forward, both of you” she stated.

Arnav Singh Raizada was all set for his wedding. Aman Mathur assisted him to get ready, especially with the stylish turban on his head. The Sherwani fitted him perfectly and why not, his mother had carefully got it designed. And the shoes he wore were his father’s choice. Everything was just perfect.

“Outfit check.. turban check.. shoes check.. hair check… shave check” Aman kept ticking the to do list to find if he missed anything. “Phone call.. check… no wait”

Arnav almost jerked by Aman’s sudden movement.

“You need to make a phone call” Aman stated. “To Khushi”

“Khushi? Why?”

“Because she had asked you to do so”

“She did?” Arnav asked amused. “Why would she ask you and not me directly?”

AK Villa
“Look at this picture.. my gosh” Revati showed a picture on her mobile to Ayush who was sitting next to her. The Mehndi and Sangeet was done and whilst the Guptas headed back to their home, the Raizadas returned to AK Villa. And since then the family was relaxing in the garden, admiring the pictures of Sangeet. Aman had clicked a handful especially Arnav – Khushi’s special dance.

“Boy” Ayush chuckled watching the picture. “The way he looks at Khushi reminds me of the time when I used to gawk at you the same way before marriage”

Revati blushed hard.

“You still gape at me the same way”

“Do I?” he grasped her arm in his. Ayush had always been vocal of his admiration towards Revati who pinched his cheek and gestured him to be cautious as Aman and Raj Mathur were around.

Butterflies tickled in Khushi’s stomach as the music stopped. She was still in Arnav Singh Raizada’s arms and their intense dance had burned the stage down for sure. There were whistles, cheers, claps and praises for them everywhere around while their eyes were still locked with each other’s.

“Kya hua?” he asked.

“I … I cannot believe it” she mumbled. “You danced with me on our Sangeet? It is like a dream come true. We were so much in sync. No one will believe we never practiced together”

Arnav smirked. He too was shocked about it. Neither he knew her steps nor he was aware of what he had to do. But the moment he ended up on the stage and saw her, his body automatically grooved with her. There was no single beat in the music when he didn’t touch her. Dancing was not his forte but he would do anything for her.

As Arnav put his foot inside the venue where the Mehndi was arranged, he got a clue of what surprise everyone was teasing him about. The stage was set in the middle of the huge lawn and it clearly indicated there were going to be some dance performance.

“What the” he snapped at Aman who was just beside. “I thought its Khushi’s Mehndi today”

“It is” Aman patted his back. “But we clubbed the Sangeet as well. Technically, its both” he grinned

“And who planned this and why?”

The marriage was fixed to the nearest best date possible considering Arnav had plans to head to Mussourie later to visit the old age home where his biological mother took her last breaths. Having only 6 days in hand to finish all the preparations, Arnav got very busy in handling his work pressure. The wedding cards were printed and everyone in Khushi’s office got to know she was marrying their client Arnav Singh Raizada. Initially her colleagues and managers were shocked but later bestowed her with lots of wishes for her good future. Along with the wedding invitation to her manager, she also handed her resignation. It was a tough call to make but Khushi wanted to ease down Arnav’s work pressure. If she takes up her role in AK Software Tech, he could mainly focus on AR Group. The decision was mutual. When Arnav shared his plans with her the same night when the marriage date was fixed, she didn’t think twice to extend her support.

“Are you guys kidding me?” Aman snapped. “So much happened in my absence here. I … I shouldn’t have gone for the meeting”

Aman was disappointed that he wasn’t present when Khushi was invited for Dinner last night with the Raizadas in AK Mansion. When he returned back Ayush and Revati told him how much he was missed and what happened in his absence.

“Son” Ayush patted his back. “You should be glad that you are still on time. We are fixing the marriage date today meeting the Guptas. You should join us”

“That goes without saying Uncle. But where is the Would-be Groom?”

“Work” Revati frowned. “Running two separate Businesses shouldn’t take a toll on his health. I wouldn’t tolerate that”

“The food was lovely” Khushi sat on the couch next to Arnav while the other Raizada couple took a seat in front.

“What are your plans for tomorrow?” Revati asked.

“Office and then back home”

“How boring” Revati mocked.

“Boring?” Ayush laughed staring at his wife. “You are forgetting our daughter-in-law is a working woman”

“I know. But what are her plans after marriage?”

Ayush got Revati down for the breakfast. Arnav was on call but he quickly winded it up when he saw them. His mother was back in form, in her usual attire though she hadn’t showered yet like she used to the first thing in the morning at Shantivan. That woman was very particular of her routine. Ayush pulled out a seat for her.

“You are leaving for work?” Ayush asked Arnav who took a seat opposite to them.

“A few meetings lined up but I should be back by early evening”

“Can you drop me to my Hotel?” Revati asked. “I need to get my luggage”

“That’s been taken care of” Arnav replied. “Your luggage will be here any moment”

Next Morning – AK Villa
Revati opened her eyes and saw her husband sitting next to her on the bed. It felt like she saw him after years. Was this a dream?

“Ayush..” she rubbed her eyes.

Ayush passed her a weak smile and handed her the glass of water with two tablets to ease her aching head.

“How… how do you know I have got a bad headache?” she got up and pressed her forehead. The ache was abnormal as if someone was hitting her head with a hammer.

“That’s what happens when you drink above your limits” he replied.

The dinner between the Raizadas and Guptas went well. Khushi was sitting next to her father at the table whereas Arnav opposite to her. They stole glances of each other and every time he looked at her, she could feel her body burning with heat. The distance between them was finally closing down. Her father had agreed for their marriage which meant they had climbed the next step towards their togetherness. So, now anything was possible and she couldn’t wait for the date of their marriage to be fixed. After all these years, her love was winning. Could there be any more thrilling than that?

“How did you get to know me and Khushi were in Paris?” Arnav suddenly raised his query to Shashi Gupta.

Ayush had the same concern and he was glad Arnav asked this.

“Shashi must have been pissed off. Poor Khushi” Ayush added. “I should go and talk to him”

The Envelope lay beside her, opened and read. Revati Raizada’s hands trembled to pick the letter again. The club presidentship. She got it!! After all these years of yearning, she got it and yet, she was not happy. Why not? Why is she not getting that blissful feeling anymore? She could lead the club, her way and no one would have the audacity to turn her decisions down. All her friends will bestow her with praises for this honor. Which friends? The ones whom she asked to get lost forever? Her face turned bitter recalling them. They were better off her life. All they cared was her classy parties, gossips and the money she spent on keeping them by her side. No. She didn’t want those friends anymore. She wants her family – her husband.

Chapter 49

Having a quick lunch, Arnav and Khushi strolled through the streets of Paris, hand-in-hand, taking in the scenery. There was art everywhere they looked around. They took a walk through in a famous museum and grabbed a table at a famous Café-Bar sipping a fresh homemade ginger-lemonade. The street entertainment was no less. There were live musicians, street entertainers and clowns which couldn’t be missed.

Arnav was thrilled to see so much of excitement on Khushi’s face. The place had rejuvenated her, brought the liveliness back which missed all these years. When one of the street dancers pulled her for the dance, she didn’t hesitate to shake her leg with him. Arnav shoved his arms in the pockets, admiring his girl dancing freely and limitless. Every time she grooved, she hadn’t missed that gaze of his – that raw carnal gaze which was enough to prove how much he wanted to take her right then and there. She had missed this. Now that his eyes were all on her, and just her, she couldn’t be more thankful to their stars for making it happen. More than her, he deserved this change of life. All his childhood and early days of adulthood had gone into work and pressure of handling the Company, fulfilling the dreams of his father and taking in the tantrums of his mother. Now with her, here, he looked liberated.

Ayush trembles seeing his son at the doorstep. How did Arnav find out his location? Is he really at here or is it just his hallucination? Ayush blinks twice before confirming that Arnav is really here to see him. He feels unprepared. Arnav though hadn’t expected himself to fall weak at their meet, tries his best to compose and lead their talk.

“You wanted to talk to me” he mutters.

Ayush gulps nervously. Yes he wants to talk but now that he is here, Ayush feels blank.

“Yes.. I .. I ..”

Arnav walks in the room without his father’s permission. It is messy. Ayush’s bag is open and lying on the couch and then not to forget his cigars are on the table too, half burnt. He was smoking. Arnav scans the room, taking in the other side of his father’s life which he had never seen in all these years. This was not him. This was not the man whom he used to live with.

“Ayush, whats wrong with you?” Revati shouts on the phone at her husband. “You said just 3 days and now you are telling me you have some more work there?”

Ayush rubbed his aching forehead. The Jet lag had gone away but the pain in his head wasn’t ready to leave. He didn’t know why.

“Revati, will you just calm down. Your fury is not helping me” he snaps.

Revati inhales deeply and goes silent for a minute.

“Is this really for Business, Ayush?”

He swallows the lump of tears.

Khushi opens the door at the second bell and faces Arnav Singh Raizada.

“Hey beautiful..” he passes her the bouquet of red roses which he specially bought for her.

She takes them, her hand shivering. She doesn’t know how he will react when he sees his father inside.

“No smile?” he asks. He is still standing out of the door. “Is it because I denied you coming to the Pub with me and Aman”

“Arnav…” she nods in denial. “There is someone home..”

“Your father is back?” he questions scanning the living room from the door. She opens the door fully and he finally sees his father. He freezes. Dad? Here? In London? At Khushi’s home? Why does he look so tired? His lips are dried. Is he been smoking? Is he not well? He is definitely skipping his medicines and his routine Doctor’s appointment too which once he used to remind his father regularly of.

Next Morning

“Shit” Arnav fetches for his mobile phone and finds it on the bedside table. Last night when he stated Khushi everything that happened between him and Ayush Singh Raizada, she comforted him and he didn’t even realize when he drifted to sleep. He has no clue what happened after that. How did Khushi manage to leave for her home? Did Aman drop her? He hopes so. He cannot imagine her going all the way alone. How can he be so irresponsible?

She picks the call after a few rings.

“Good morning lazy head” Khushi exclaims the moment she answers his call.

“Morning” he sighs. “Don’t be mad at me for dozing last night. I was mentally tired and .. I seriously didn’t realize when I slept” he apologizes.

Khushi smiles. She recalls he was broke last night; he needed a support and she stayed beside him on the bed, trying to put him to rest while he held her hand and kept gaining his strength back.

“I am not Sheetal Mathur to get frustrated on every silly reason” she teases.

Chapter 43

Flashback – 5 months ago

Khushi’s sudden departure to London had made him lifeless. But he was not going to lose hope. His broken engagement with Sheetal Mathur had left a bad taste in between their families. His mother, Revati was continuously taunting him for being selfish. Though it hurt him, he never back answered her. She had all rights to hate his actions. His marriage to Sheetal would have made her the President of her Club which was her dream from past many years. It broke because of him. What he doesn’t understand is, where has he fallen short in showering his love as a son to her that she is still unable to love and accept him fully? He shuts his eyes tight. This is a very sensitive topic and it has always hurt him whenever he thought about it.

One side where his mother was getting uncontrollably mad at him, even Raj Mathur and his father Ayush Singh Raizada were no longer in talking terms with each other. Their years of friendship had shaken because of his one decision. Aman was the only one who still supported his actions apart from his father, Ayush. He was the only one who knew the repercussions of Sheetal’s life had she married his best friend Arnav. No one would be happy.

Things would take time to heal and Arnav had decided to fix things here and get back to his lady love in London. He had a lot to do there too. Convincing Khushi’s family was the trickiest one.

“Sir, this courier has come for Ayush Sir. As he has gone out for a meeting, we need your signatures to accept it” Pam, Arnav’s secretary keeps the envelope on his desk and waits for his signatures on the delivery receipt. Arnav does the needful and she leaves.

The envelope belongs to Mrs. Anita Raizada, c/o Ayush Singh Raizada.

What the hell is this? Who is Anita Raizada? He is confused and the reply only his father would have.

That night, Arnav hands over the envelope to his father. They were alone in the drawing room. Ayush was stunned to see Arnav handing him that envelope.

“Who is Anita Raizada, Dad?”

Ayush swallowed hard. He would have given some excuse hadn’t Revati not heard this name while entering the Drawing room.

“Anita? Why is she contacting you now, Ayush?” Revati stormed in the room.

Arnav is even more confused. So, his mother knows too? Who is this woman? What relationship does she have with them?

“Revati, it’s okay. We can talk this later” Ayush tried to convince her.

“Ayush, if she or her son try to contact us, just push them away. We have nothing to do with them. Do you understand?”

Ayush got up from the couch. He is totally frustrated.

“Will you just stop talking about them?”

“Why?” She snapped. “Are you by any chance helping them? Is that why she is still in touch with you?”

Ayush was afraid of his wife’s questions because they were leading Arnav to build a picture of their family circle in his mind. And if he managed to connect the dots then he would know his true identity.

“Who is Anita Raizada?” Arnav interrupted them and this time strongly.

“No one” he replied.

“Why lying to him, Ayush? Arnav should know about them too. I don’t want them to be in touch with anyone amongst us” Revati replied and then turned to Arnav to speak.

“Stop it” Ayush groaned. “Just drop this matter here”

Both Revati and Arnav became suspicious of Ayush’s behavior.

“Mom… Please” Arnav intervened their argument. “If Dad doesn’t wish to talk about this.. I think we should respect that”

Revati frowned and then clapped.

“How thoughtful Arnav. You really care a lot for your father, don’t you? Wish you had shown the same consideration for me.”

“Mom… please.. I have always loved you”

“Really? I don’t think so. And I repent that day when I agreed to adopt you”

Her harsh words broke Arnav. He was already going through a rough phase and it killed him to hear that from Revati Raizada.

“Revati” Ayush scolded her but she didn’t stop.

“We molded you into something valuable otherwise you were nothing but a piece of junk. God knows whose cheap blood you have inside this body of yours”

“Enough” Ayush scolded in anger, dragging his wife away from Arnav whose eyes teared at her cruel accusations. “Don’t say a word against my son”

“Your son?” Revati scoffed. “We adopted him Ayush. That doesn’t make him part of our family.”

“He is a part of this family.. a real heir of the Raizada family.” Ayush confronted unknowing of the consequences. “He has Raizada blood in him.. because he is Anil and Anita’s son… My elder brother’s son…”

Arnav stumbled back listening to that statement. Ayush Singh Raizada knew about his true identity? All these years he wasn’t even aware that Ayush had a brother and today that unknown man is been tagged to be his father?

A lone drop of tear escapes Arnav’s eye while narrating this flashback to Khushi. She clutches his arm, sitting next to him.

“I was part of them… their family… and he knew it all the time.. but he never told me. Never!! If I hadn’t received that envelope that day, this truth would never be out. How can he do that to me?”

Khushi rubs his arm to soothe his pain whilst Arnav told her what happened next.

Revati froze.

“Anil’s son?” she snapped. “Arnav is Anil’s son and you didn’t tell me?”

Ayush didn’t reply. He dropped himself on the couch again, his palms shutting his face. Arnav reached the couch and kneeled down before Ayush.

“Why?” he asked. Ayush instantly opened his eyes and met Arnav’s questioning stare. “Why didn’t you tell me this before? Why did you hide it?”
Ayush stayed silent. He didn’t know what to say.

“Arnav” Ayush tried to touch his face but he shrugged.

“Why?” he groaned at Ayush.

“Your father was not a good man. He… he was going to kill your mother when you were in her womb and to save you, she had to kill him”

That history of his birth came as another shock for Arnav.

“Revati wouldn’t approve your adoption if I had told her about your true identity. Your father had thrown me of his life, family and property long ago and Revati always had grudge against your parents. I had to lie. I had to lie to her that you are no one to us. I didn’t want to lose you son. I had to lie”

He tried to touch him again but this time instead of shrugging his father’s arm, Arnav picks the vase placed on the table next to the couch and throws it away with a force, breaking it into pieces. He is shattered and nothing or no one could control his anger. He stood up and left the room despite Ayush’s attempts to stop him.

Arnav shivers recalling that incident.

“I have never spoken to him since then.. And I never will” he mutters fisting his fingers.

“Arnav…” she gasps. She has no words to console him.

“He lied to his wife, I understand. But why did he lie to me? Why didn’t he tell me? I had a right to know Khushi” he meets her eyes with pain. She nods in agreement and hugs him tight.

“yes.. yes… Arnav” she sobs with him. “You had right to know.. you had right to know”

Arnav tries to swallow his pain but it doesn’t work. When people you love the most hurt you, you die. That’s what happened with him. The man he trusted the most, loved, adored, respected the most hurt him, a part of him died. That one secret from Ayush Singh Raizada changed Arnav’s entire life and it wouldn’t be easy for anyone in his place to forgive so easily.

******************

An hour later

Khushi came out of Arnav’s room, lost and utterly shocked by the revelation.

“Hello….” Aman clicks his fingers, stopping her on the stairs.

She comes of her stance and meets his eyes. Aman reads her eyes and gets serious.

“You okay? What happened? Where is Arnav?”

“In his room” she replies. “Sleeping now”

“Sleeping? I … I don’t understand.. Is he alright?” he is about to make a move to check on Arnav but Khushi stops him.

“He told me everything” Khushi exclaims.

Aman is shocked.

“Oh” he sighs. “Good he told you. I was hoping he does that soon because handling him myself was getting tough”

Khushi nods.

“Anyways, now that you know, I have to talk to you something. Come”

Aman takes her down and they sit on the Couch in the living room.

“Arnav had come straight to me that night.. after he got to know this truth..” Aman informs. “He was so… so devastated by this truth. I mean… anyone would be the same in his place. To have a biological father like that who backstabbed his marital relationship and tried to kill his own wife and baby. Then having a mother who.. who was probably serving a lifetime imprisonment. The next few days were tougher for Arnav. He didn’t step in Shantivan for almost a week. He stayed with me in my guest house”

Khushi gulps her tears. Wish she was there that time, to support him. There he absorbed that pain alone and here she was taking counselling sessions to remove him from her heart. That seemed so useless and unnecessary to her today.

“His anger towards Ayush uncle was justified. For two weeks Arnav didn’t step at work. He just stayed alone, aloof, probably thinking of his next actions. And then suddenly one day, he went back to Shantivan to pack his stuff and shifted to a hotel” Aman adds.

“Hotel?”

“Yes… It was obvious he didn’t want to stay in Shantivan with his foster parents anymore. I asked him .. tried to patch them up but probably it was too soon. He didn’t even wish to talk about them. Considering his sensitive state, I stopped my efforts and hoped that time would take care of it. But nothing simplified. Ayush Singh Raizada tried to communicate with him many a times, but Arnav always ignored him. It’s like he had made his mind. He wanted to get away from them. Forever.. The resignation from his role in AR group didn’t come as a surprise to me, but Ayush Uncle was definitely shocked. He tried to stop Arnav but when he was not ready to negotiate anything, Uncle had to accept his resignation”

Khushi wipes her tears that keep rolling down from her eyes.

“Weeks… and then months passed. Arnav formed this new company.. AK Software Tech and obviously because of his knowledge, experience and skills, he earned good clients instantly. And then… he moved here… Rest all you already know”

Khushi nods weakly.

“It seems he was looking for his real mother’s whereabouts and just a while ago, he got this message that she is no more” Khushi informs. “She died 7 years back”

Aman is again shocked. Though Arnav had not informed him anything about this, neither told him that he was even digging his past.

“He needs help Khushi” Aman replies. “He seems to be normal from outside, but he is broken. He feels cheated by Ayush Uncle.. And this agitation… is not good for him. I know it will take time for things to heal but he has to try come out of it because I cannot see him drowning in pain. He needs help”

Khushi thinks the same. He has to come out of it otherwise it will worsen his life.
